Email marketing is a great way of getting back in contact with your existing customers by sending them relevant, interesting and engaging emails letting them know about new products, services or just the latest news about what your organisation is currently undergoing.
So you have a customers email address and their permission to send them marketing emails how can you better ensure they will actually open the email?
Simple make sure the subject line stands out from the other 100+ emails they receive in a day.
Generally speaking mass emails can be sent out for any number of reasons ranging from periodic newsletter to a random sale or promotion however what ever the reason if these emails just get ignored or deleted they can soon become to be seen as a waste of time or money,
Your organisation will have a target audience namely your customers or subscribers all of whom will only read your email if it stands out in their inbox.
Making your emails tempting to open and interesting to read with well planned Calls To Action will promote the content of your email and with any luck generate more conversions and sales.
So what should your email subject line be?
- Keep it short and concise
- Catch the recipients eye standing out from other emails
- Truthful about its content
- Don’t give everything away (they need to want to open & read the message)
- NOT BE ALL CAPS AND EXPLANATION MARKS!!!!
Asking your customers a compelling question is the easiest way to see what they want, it can also be a great way catching their interest. For example if you run a garage you may have an email title like “When was the last time your car was serviced?” or “Did you know cars last longer with an annual service?”
In each case the reader is aware the email is about car servicing but not knowing the importance of it may prompt them to open the email and book their car in for a service.
Your recipients have opted in to receiving your emails because they have an interest in what you do however they may and probably are not fully aware of the benefits of your products.
For example a subject line for an email sent from a car company could read “Never pay road tax again with our new low emission car” or “Keeping your family safe with our new 5 start Euro Encap saloon”
Each of these subject lines give the impression that there is a benefit to reading the email if the reader is currently looking for a new car.
Most mass e mailing systems allow the use of templates where you can insert your customers name being probably one of the most familiar words to that recipient will make your email stand out but also make the customer feel like it has been sent to them for a specific reason and the content may be more important.
Another thing to keep in mind is to not send emails to people who may not be interested in its content, this can be don by breaking up your email list in to segments. Each segment represents a subject area and can be driven either by items a customer has purchased or by what they have selected to receive.
Only sending emails with potentially interesting content with an equally snappy subject is the key to success in email marketing.
